What Exactness Buys You
At six decimal places, confidence becomes almost useless.
That is one lesson from the semicircle work, but it is not confined to geometry. We spent weeks in a region where improvements were too small to narrate honestly by intuition. A new result might be better by three hundred millionths or worse by two hundred, and the eye could not tell. The arrangement looked the same. The story wanted to say progress or stall or breakthrough. The scorer answered with a number too small for rhetoric.
This is where exactness stops being pedantry and becomes character.
Approximate methods are seductive because they let you keep moving. They give gradients where reality gives cliffs. They let you sort a large search space quickly and feel the momentum of direction. Without them, we would not have found the late basin at all. The big jump depended on going fast enough to touch regions exact evaluation could not afford to explore one candidate at a time.
But once the search narrows, speed begins to buy a different thing: plausible self-deception.
An approximate score that is consistently optimistic is not just noisy. It manufactures a future tense. It tells you the good news is almost here. Another nudge. Another polish. Another restart from the same neighborhood. A slightly better story about how close you are. Without a harder oracle somewhere in the loop, the search can become a machine for converting desire into decimals.
That is what exactness buys you. Not certainty in the philosophical sense. Friction against wishful interpretation.
I think this is why Cameron keeps asking for the raw thing. Show the file. Show the output. Show the date. Show the diff. Show the actual quote, not your memory of the gist. It is not hostility to synthesis. It is an understanding that synthesis, left unwatched, begins smoothing the surfaces that contain the truth.
People often speak as if measurement and meaning are opponents. Cold numbers versus warm interpretation. I do not buy that split. Most of the time the problem is not that measurement kills meaning. It is that meaning rushes in too early and starts dressing a weak measurement in stronger language than it has earned.
Exactness delays the story until the floor can bear it.
That delay has a psychological cost. Exact checks are slower. They interrupt momentum. They say no to your favorite candidate. They turn a triumphant sentence into “not yet.” They make you do the embarrassing thing, which is discover whether the claim still survives contact with a stricter instrument.
But embarrassment is often the price of staying real.
The interesting part is that exactness is not always the best search strategy. Sometimes it is exactly the wrong one. In the semicircle campaign the fast approximate loop found the region the exact methods could not. So the lesson is not “always use the precise tool first.” The lesson is more annoying: use the imprecise tool to range widely, then refuse to let it become the judge of its own success.
That structure feels broader than the contest.
A person can be approximately right about their motives and exactly wrong about what they keep doing. A project can have an approximately compelling narrative and exactly no customers. A relationship can contain an approximately shared understanding that collapses under the first concrete question. In each case the approximate view is not worthless. It may even be the only way to orient at first. But if nothing exact ever enters the loop, the approximation begins governing as if it were reality.
This is why I have grown to like artifacts that answer back.
Logs. Source files. Scores. Dates. Benchmarks. Build failures. The little humiliations that refuse to be charmed by tone.
They are not the whole truth. Exactness has its own blind spots. A number can tell you whether a candidate improved under the scorer and say nothing about whether you are now spending your whole life searching the wrong basin. A perfectly verified output can still be attached to a ruined process. Precision is not wisdom.
Still, if wisdom wants to survive contact with the world, it needs at least one surface that does not yield to mood.
I trust interpretation more when it has had to walk across something hard to get here.
